Work at Hillside: “I definitely encourage people to make that first step”

WHAM-TV and Fox News in Rochester recently spoke to two Hillside employees about the agency’s community impact — and about opportunities to make a difference by joining the Hillside family.

In the interview, reporter Matt Malloy spoke with Kathy Holmes, Hillside’s Director of Family-Driven Care; and Wendy Chace, a Family Peer Advocate. Holmes and Chace shared their perspectives on Hillside’s role in helping build stronger families and communities, and how a wide range of personal experiences and skills are vital to provide Hillside’s coordinated services.

“I definitely encourage people to make that first step” and explore opportunities at Hillside, Chace said. “To be able to walk with other families through their journey – to help them not feel so isolated, to have hope, to be encouraged – I’m able to do that at Hillside. I’m very grateful.”

Hillside is hiring for a wide range of positions in all regions served by the agency. With on-the-job training provided for all roles as needed, many available full- and part-time positions require no more formal experience than a high school diploma or GED. The agency also provides competitive benefits, flexible scheduling and a minimum starting salary of $15/hour.

Hillside Seeking Dedicated People to Serve the Community

Maria Cristalli, President and CEO of Hillside, was interviewed recently on WROC-TV (Channel 8, Rochester) on the topic of Hillside’s need for new employees in all regions who can help the agency fulfill its mission of service to children and families in need. See the entire interview here.

“We’re looking for people with a strong desire to make a difference in their community,” Cristalli said. “There’s such a variety of roles available here at Hillside. You can work directly with youth and families on one of our residential campuses, in our group homes, and in community-based settings.”

She added that educational backgrounds and skillsets vary for different roles, but many Hillside positions are accessible to individuals with a high school diploma. Hillside implemented a $15/hour minimum wage for all employees in May 2021.

Hillside Receives Community Impact Grant from New York Life for Prince George’s County HWSC Program

Hillside, one of the largest child-and-family human services organizations in the United States, has been awarded a $15,000 Community Impact Grant from New York Life. The grant supports program operations for Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection (HWSC), a youth development program that has operated in Prince George’s County, Maryland, since 2007.

“We are grateful for New York Life’s investment in Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection, which will change many lives for the better,” said Karene Brodie, HWSC Regional Executive Director. “This support from New York Life will strengthen our already impactful program that helps middle and high school students in Prince George’s County Public Schools realize their dreams of graduation, college and career.”

“I’m proud to work for a company that encourages its agents and employees to devote their time, energy and talents to support the needs and priorities of their local community,” said Kirk Blackman, an agent with New York Life’s Greater Washington General Office and current Chairman of the Prince George’s County HWSC Advisory Council. “We are pleased that our partnership will have a long-lasting impact on Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection and the population they serve.”

The Community Impact Grant program awards grants to local nonprofit organizations, which are championed by New York Life agents and employees. Since the program’s inception in 2008, approximately 700 grants totaling more than $9 million have been awarded to nonprofits across the country.

Founded in 1987, nationally recognized Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection provides comprehensive, highly coordinated assistance to participating youth who are determined to be at risk of dropping out of high school. HWSC uses an evidence-based model that combines long-term mentoring with job training, part-time work experience and year-round academic support. In 2020, 91 percent of Prince George’s County high school seniors who remained in the program since Grade 9 graduated on time.

Hillside Announces Minimum Wage of $15/hour for All Employees

Hillside has announced the establishment of a new minimum wage of $15 per hour for all positions in the organization. The change, which has been in development for several months and will take effect beginning June 5, 2021, was shared with all staff by Maria Cristalli, President and Chief Executive Officer. “I am delighted to announce this permanent shift in Hillside’s compensation structure,” Cristalli said, adding that the change will also positively impact those making above this new minimum in the future. “This is an important step in raising compensation for the many critical roles that our staff play in the lives of children and families.” Hillside employs nearly 2,000 women and men in a broad range of service areas including direct care, clinical and education. The agency’s residential treatment and community-based programs support the needs of more than 10,000 children, adults and families every year. “Hillside’s staff have done extraordinary work during the pandemic. We continue to advocate for increased investment in human services workers with our government partners. We believe our essential workers deserve the security of a $15-per-hour minimum wage today,” Cristalli said
